Book No One I Knew Review :

From the blurb:When Cleo Cooper’s daughter vanishes during a family barbecue, her perfect life begins to unravel.Everyone thinks three-year-old Immy drowned in the river at the bottom of the garden.Everyone except Cleo. Because all her instincts tell her someone took her daughter. Someone she knew. With time running out, Cleo sets out to uncover the truth. But the deeper she probes, the more she realises everyone has a secret to hide. Especially her husband. And as Cleo unpicks the lies, she discovers her carefully constructed life was just an illusion.-----------------------------------------------------------My two cents:Wow! This was really great! The suspense went all the way through. There was no lull in the storyline. One of the best psychological suspense thrillers I've read this year (out of 101 books so far as of 6/3/21). 4-stars is my top rating for psychological suspense. I am stingy with my 5-star reviews and save them for only the most special, most touching, most mesmerizing, and life-changing books, which really doesn't apply to this genre, IMO, even though it's my 2nd favorite genre after historical fiction. This was my first book by this author. I've already got another one at my fingertips! The setting was Stour House, a $1.2M riverside home on the River Stour, in the little village of Fordwich, England. It's the dream home of Cleo Cooper, a successful entrepreneur in the meal-kit business, affluent, and in control. Her company makes 10 times her husband's annual income of $35K every 3 months. She's the breadwinner in the family who also ran the house, made the decisions, and looked after the family. Her husband deferred to her in everything they did, and she despised him for it. They'd been together 20 years.Stuart Cooper is her non-ambitious husband, a freelance ecologist and SAHD by choice. He's no longer the buff guy who protected her or treated her like a princess in their uni days. They have two children, 6-year old Nathan “Nate”, and 3-year old Imogen “Immy”. They had a Swedish nanny, Astrid, 5’11” with the chiseled cheeks of a Viking warrior after Nate was born. Cleo admired her as a person. She was assertive, punctual, and a perfectionist. When she left a year later to chase her backpacking boyfriend to the Gold Coast, Stuart made it clear to Cleo he didn't want another ball breaker like Astrid scolding him and bossing him around. He wanted a live-in au pair who could occasionally babysit for them. They decided on Niamh (pronounced “neev”), an 18-year-old girl from Ireland who was shy, soft-spoken, and eager to please. She had pretty red hair and kind eyes. Nate adored her. She stayed til Immy was a month old before leaving them for a family in Rochester.Cleo began the business, Food Wrapped, an organic meal-kit company, 16 years ago, with fellow university grad, business partner, and close friend, Bill Harrison, right after graduation. It was now worth $1.8M. Cleo was a go-getter, efficient, always busy, always working, but still involved with her children.Cleo’s secretary, Sheila Dixon, with her pressed blouses, polyester pants, and shellacked hairdo, kept things organized for Cleo and for Bill, whom she adored. She’d frequently had to run home to take care of her elderly mother, Maud, but still kept up with the demands of her job.Cleo and Stuart invited best friends, Bill and Melanie Harrison, over for a BBQ on a beautiful Sunday in June. They were always together and occasionally went on holiday together. They were well fed and drinking champagne in their fenced-in back yard and garden when they noticed Immy was missing. The water gates were always kept locked and the keys were kept inside too high for the kids to reach. After Nate said Immy went to play Pooh sticks - throwing sticks in the water and running to the second gate to see which one went further, Cleo ran along the river looking for her and freaked out when she came across an eye floating in the reeds! It was from Immy’s new Peppa Pig beanie boo, a gift Melanie had just given her hours ago. A river search was quickly and thoroughly done. The cops had only found a single sandal that belonged to Immy.Cleo and Stuart found out Niamh is back in the area, but don't know why. She's 22 now. Cleo is grasping at straws and tries to find her to ask if she knows where Immy might be. What she finds out is shocking. And what she sees after that is even more shocking. There's all kinds of craziness that goes on. I'd figured out 2 big twists early on, but there were plenty more. While the ending was good, it wasn't quite as satisfying as it would have been if it hand been ambiguous. It's only okay if there's going to be a sequel.I look forward to reading more by this author!
I understand that people want all these twists and turns nowadays with books but sometimes I think authors get carried away. I was enjoying the book until it was getting so convoluted that I didn't care anymore about any of the characters. I finished the book because I wanted to see what happened but it was a bit too much.
